Gauguin’s ceramic sculptures : sources and meaning. To explain Gauguin’s earliest ceramic works, Japanese and Peruvian influences are often evoked. Although these are by no means absent, they do not suffice to explain certain forms. The heavily-charged decorative elements seem in fact to be inspired by the 1875 publication, Histoire de la céramique, by Auguste Demmin, illustrated by Arosa who was Gauguin’s tutor. Gauguin was apparently sensitive to the Renaissance and Medieval taste for the fantastic, and the inspiration for his ceramic works seems to correspond with a nineteenth-century notion of the grotesque.
