A woman artist and her Prime Minister : informal remarks on Art by W.E. Gladstone (1886-1890). Thanks to her social status, Dorothy Tennant had, on several occasions, the opportunity of meeting painters as well as key politicians of the end of the 19th century. From her diary', the personal relation she had with the liberal Prime Minister W.E. Gladstone can be brought to light ; thanks to the account of their conversations it is possible to know' better the artistic opinions Gladstone voiced, particularly as regards the portrait and British painting.
