On the Question of Decorative Arts Contrary to painting, sculpture and architecture, there is no specific word to designate the « art of the object », which is customarily described using very general and, at times, disparaging terms : minor arts, industrial arts, precious arts, decorative arts. Starting from this fact, the author of this editorial examines the status of the art of the object today. Reviewing the efforts deployed in France over time by collectors, museums, libraries, universities, research centers, governmental agencies and publishers, he ends on an optimistic note, saluting the work that has been done so far and looking forward to future developments.

Constatant l’absence d’un vocable pouvant nommer « l’art de l’objet », généralement désigné au moyen d’expressions inexactes ou réductrices - arts mineurs, arts industriels, arts précieux, arts décoratifs -, alors que ce vocable existe bien pour la « peinture », la « sculpture », ou « l’architecture », l’auteur s’interroge dans cet éditorial sur la façon dont cet art est considéré aujourd’hui. Il évoque les actions menées, pour les différentes périodes, par les collectionneurs, les institutions muséales et les bibliothèques, les universités et les centres de recherche scientifique, les directions régionales des affaires culturelles, les éditeurs. Le constat n’est cependant pas si alarmant car le défrichement est bien entamé de même que sont formés ceux qui prendront la relève.
