Gordon Matta-Glark (1943-1978) -the American artist renowned for his dissections, perforations, and cuts performed on walls, floors, windows and doors of buildings on the verge of being demolished -has worked in two main ways with the architectural element of the façade, in order to criticize the twentieth-century modernist project regarding art and architecture. By addressing the distinction between literal and phenomenal transparency established by architects C. Rowe and R. Slutzky in the 1960’s, this article seek to analyze the strategies that Matta-Glark used to deconstruct, materially and symbolically, this architectural and allegorical element.

L’artiste américain Gordon Matta-Clark (1943-1978) -connu pour ses coupures, perforations, amputations et dissections de murs, fenêtres, sols et portes de bâtiments destinés à la démolition -, a mis en œuvre deux formes de travail avec l’élé- ment architectural de la façade, pour s’attaquer au projet moderniste de l’architecture et de l’art. En se fondant snr la distinction établie dans les années 1960 par les théoriciens de l’architecture C. Rowe et R. Slutzky entre une transparence virtuelle et une transparence littérale, nous voudrions approfondir l’analyses des stratégies auxquelles Matta-Clark a eu recours pour proposer une déconstruction matérielle et symbolique de cet élément architectural et allégorique.
