From the Treasure to the Museum. Notes for a History of the Exhibition of Reliquaries in the Treasury of Saint-Maurice d’Agaune The Treasure of St. Maurice’s Abbey (Valais, Switzerland) occupies a singular place in the history of ecclesiastical treasuries, since it is a collection where the majority of objects were assigned a liturgical use from the time of their creation. The treasury is composed of a set of precious objects, intended for the ornatus of the church, for veneration and the liturgy, and for the display of relics, including shrines, boxes, crosses, and head and arm reliquaries. If its reinstallation in a museographic setting constitutes one of the major events enacted on the occasion of the 1500th anniversary of the Abbey, this change is also an opportunity to think about the different ways this collection was displayed across time. In this contribution, I propose an examination of the different modalities of exhibiting the reliquary shrines in the Abbey, from the beginning of the 15th century on, and will look at the impact on their future display.

Le trésor de l’abbaye de Saint-Maurice d’Agaune (Valais, Suisse) occupe une place singulière au sein de l’histoire des trésors ecclésiastiques, car il s’agit d’un ensemble conséquent d’objets rattachés, pour la plupart depuis très longtemps, à ce sanctuaire toujours affecté au culte. Il recouvre un ensemble d’objets précieux destinés à l’ornement comme à l’exercice du culte, et à la vénération des reliques : châsses, coffrets, croix, bustes, chefs et bras reliquaires entre autres. Si son redéploiement dans un nouvel espace muséographique constitue l’une des manifestations majeures déployées à l’occasion des festivités liées au 1500e anniversaire de la fondation de l’abbaye, il est aussi l’occasion de réfléchir aux dispositifs. Dans cette contribution, nous proposons de revenir sur les différentes modalités d’exposition, depuis le début du XVe siècle, des châsses reliquaires conservées dans le trésor abbatial, et leur impact sur leur exposition contemporaine.
