The contrast between regions of unequal economic development has given varying characters and different characteristics to tourist activity on both sides of the frontier. Spanish mountain-climbers like the mountain peaks on the French side. People taking waters in spas of holidaying in summer are drawn towards Spain by the low prices of some goods and some kind of local colour which is beginning to wear off in fact. The vagaries of the borderline or the differences in political status make this even more striking in Cerdagne, Valle de Aran and Andorra where tourism has become an industry and is nearly unbearable. Pilgrimages, leisure activities and festivals in the main towns of the two mountain-border regions add to the complexity of exchanges over the border.

Les contrastes de paysages d'inégal développement économique ont donné au tourisme de part et d'autre de la frontière des caractères différents et créé des mouvements variés. Les ascensionnistes espagnols sont friands des grands sommets français. De France les curistes et les vacanciers estivaux sont attirés vers l'Espagne par le bas prix de certains produits et par l'attrait d'un typisme qui commence d'ailleurs à s'émousser. Les singularités du tracé frontalier ou du statut politique renforcent encore le phénomène en Cerdagne, en Val d'Aran et surtout en Andorre où le fait touristique tourne à l'industrie, aux limites du supportable. Les pèlerinages, les distractions et les festivités des grandes villes des deux bordures montagnardes ajoutent encore à la complexité des échanges frontaliers.
