The rail and road links between Nord - Pas-de-Calais and Lorraine are very poor. It is easier to go from Metz to Lille by crossing Luxemburg and Belgium, than by using the french roads. The motorway construction plan, as defined by the CIAT on 13.4.1987 does not allow any motorway extension between Nord - Pas-de-Calais and Lorraine. When the Tunnel under the Channel is completed, Lorraine will be out of the main european axis. The choice of the East-TGV track is not definitive yet. But choosing the southern (central) track would be an anti-european act. It would contribute towards isolating Lorraine. Is it a sign of a general french withdrawal ?

Les relations ferroviaires et routières entre le Nord -Pas-de-Calais et la Lorraine sont fort médiocres. Il est plus facile de gagner Lille, en partant de Metz, en traversant le Luxembourg et la Belgique, qu'en empruntant les routes françaises. Le plan de construction autoroutier défini par le CIAT du 1 3 avril 1 987 ne prévoit pas de prolongement autoroutier du Nord -Pas-de-Calais vers la Lorraine, Lorsque le tunnel sous la Manche sera achevé la Lorraine se trouvera à l'écart des grands axes européens. Le choix du tracé du TGV-Est n'est pas encore définitif. Mais retenir le tracé méridional (centre !) serait un acte anti-européen. Il contribuerait à isoler la Lorraine. Peut-on parler d'un repli français général ?
