An example of a technopole on an industrial wasteland : The productique centre in Saint-Etienne. The lack of flat area available, and the absence of intercommunal cooperation in the agglomeration of Saint-Etienne, led to the decision to erect on an industrial wasteland the research and high technology activities that were to be the dynamic element of the development. The distorsions in the aims and strategies of those involved are such that they can account the difficulties of carrying out a true synergy between research and industry. For want of a total change of image, it triggered mostly an exasperation of contrasts within tim, and within space.

La rareté des terrains plats disponibles et l'absence de coopération intercommunale au sein de l'agglomération stéphanoise ont conduit à la décision d'installer sur cette friche proche du centre ville les activités de recherche et de haute technologie qui devaient être le moteur de la reconversion industrielle. Les distorsions dans les objectifs et les stratégies des différents acteurs peuvent expliquer les difficultés dans la mise en oeuvre d'une véritable synergie entre la recherche et l'industrie. Plus qu'un changement radical d'image, l'opération a provoqué une exaspération des contrastes dans le temps et dans l'espace.
