French Air Transport and the European Community. January 1, 1993 is the date when air transport will be liberalized in the twelve European Community countries and that is likely to initiate considerable changes in Europe civil aviation. As the appointed day draws nearer French policy regarding air transport, the regulations applying to it and its predominantly nationalized structures must be totally reversed. Therefore, it is not surprising that even the step-by-step transition process stired up bitter clashes between the French Government and its state-owned company on the one part and the Commission and Court of the European Communauty on the other part.

1993, l'an 1 de la liberté pour les transporteurs aériens des douze pays du Marché Commun, sera, nul n'en doute, le début de changements considérables dans le ciel européen. Pour le transport aérien français, l'approche de l'inéluctable échéance aura impliqué une inversion complète du principe et des règles de sa structure et de son activité. Il n'est donc pas surprenant que même les adaptations de transition aient donné matière à d'âpres affrontements entre l'Etat français et son transporteur d'une part, et les organes administratif et juridictionnel de la Communauté d'autre part.
