The article recounts the historical bases (economic, social and cultural) and geographical (urban scattering and functions, fields of relationships and exchanges) even political ones that, on the one hand bring nearer and, on the other hand, distinguish the urban alsacian system from those constituted along the Rhenish axis. It reveals the assets and organizing specificities of a «Rhenish model» envied in Alsace, but itself affected by actual perhaps fragilizing transformations.

L'article retrace les bases historiques (économiques, sociales et culturelles) et géographiques (semis et fonctions des villes, champs de relations et d'échanges), voire politiques, qui, d'un côté rapprochent, et d'un autre distinguent le système urbain alsacien de ceux constitués au long de l'axe rhénan. Il évoque les atouts et spécificités organisationnelles d'un «modèle rhénan» envié en Alsace, mais lui-même affecté de transformations actuelles peut-être fragilisantes.
