Floodplain hazard and territories. Floodplains now represents significant local and socio-economi-cal stakes. On this hydrological area where floods occur, several other territorial reasoning (economical, social, political) are superposed and confront themselves. The paper analyses the territories notion concerned by the flood hazard according to a geographical and a legal approach. It shows how the definition of the area exposed to floods evolved with the regulation prevention tools. It underlines the problem of the distinct space and time scales specific to each territorial analysis and discusses floodplains appropriateness to prevention and local development objectives.

Les zones inondables représentent désormais un enjeu local et socio-économique considérable. Sur ce " territoire " hydrologique touché par l'inondation, plusieurs logiques territoriales (économiques, sociales, politiques) se superposent et se confrontent. L'article analyse la notion de " territoire " concerné par le risque d'inondation fluviale selon une approche géographique et juridique. Il montre comment la définition et la délimitation des territoires exposés aux inondations a évolué avec les outils réglementaires de prévention du risque. Il souligne le problème des différences d'échelles de temps et d'espaces propres à chaque logique territoriale et discute l'adéquation des zones inondables aux objectifs de prévention et de développement local.
