The narrow passages of water connecting two seas are often territories which are poorly recognized, however, they are often central to a host of sensitive issues intimately involving the bordering entities. These issues, by their very complex multiform nature, tend to produce a notion of a common shared spatial entity embracing the entirety of the Straits involved. The writers propose that these spatial entities are quite exceptional and which may be termed as being of a nature truly «social spacial». To evaluate the particular Straits capacity of being an inherent entity in its own right the writers propose a method of identification criteria based on classic social and urbane geographic concepts. Three different series of characteristics have been developed. This first step constitutes a first approach which facilitates a rapid identification of the concepts which merit further study. These criteria show firstly how the realities of the straits are seen by the different actors involved, secondly the identified straits environmental criteria, and thirdly the administrative structures in place. The objective of this method is to propose a tool which facilitates our understanding of the working of a Straits territory. The writers have selected the environment of the Dover Straits as a test case which will hopefully provide a method which may be used elsewhere.

Les détroits sont des espaces méconnus, pourtant ils sont souvent au cœur de problématiques aiguës du fait de leur extrême richesse en terme de proximités. Ces dernières qui sont intrinsèques à leur définition permettent une multitude de relations qui élaborent peut-être une certaine territorialisation de l'espace du détroit. Nous partons du postulat de l'existence d'une configuration spatiale exceptionnelle, appelée ici formation socio-spatiale. Pour évaluer sa possible territorialisation, nous avons tenté d'élaborer une méthodologie d'identification des détroits fondée sur des travaux qui touchent principalement à la géographie sociale et à la géographie urbaine. Trois séries de critères ont été définis. Cette distinction rapide constitue une première étape de recherche et une proposition donnée à lire. Ces critères recouvrent les représentations par différents acteurs de la réalité du détroit, les contextes environnementaux qui s'intéressent aux données factuelles des rives du détroit et enfin à la structuration administrative d'une telle maille. L'intérêt d'une telle grille est d'essayer de proposer un outil de compréhension des détroits. Notre espace-test concerne le Pas de Calais, l'objectif étant d'essayer d'utiliser cette démarche dans d'autres espaces de détroits.
