Transforming sociaI and spatial structures in Celtic Tiger Ireland: Dublin in the 1990s

This paper examines the major changes that have taken place in Dublin over the last fifteen years, highlighting the dual challenges faced by city planners-regenerating the city centre and constraining urban sprawl. It identifies the key aims with regard to Dublin of the National Spatial Strategy which was recently produced in an attempt to balance regional development. The gap between the rhetoric of consolidation and the reality of current patterns of growth is highlighted. However recent progress towards, and the success of, land intensification in the city centre through brownfield regeneration is also discussed.

Cet article examine les principaux changements intervenus à Dublin au cours des quinze dernières années, accentuant les deux défis majeurs des aménageurs urbains : régénérer le centre de la ville et limiter l'étalement urbain. Il identifie les objectifs principaux récemment présentés dans la National Spatial Strategy, quant à l'équilibre du développement régional. L'écart entre les politiques et la réalité du développement est examiné. Le succès de la densification du centre de la cité par la réutilisation des brownfields est discuté.
