Toronto or the emergence of a new city-world — G. Poiret. During the second half of the twentieth century, Canada saw the city of Toronto becoming the major centre of the country right before Montreal, previously the dominant city. Capital of Ontario, Toronto was showing its huge potential which was remaining secret before. This new deal is combined with a new reflection on the architecture of the city. In fact, Toronto now looks at New York which is seen as the US model which should be imitated in Canada. However, the "Canadian big apple " can hardly become a major player in the north American economy. Actually, this article is focused on the description of the city within the context of the globalisation. We'll try to show the ethnic diversity of the entire city, then we'll focus on its economic power in the world system, finally we 'II give an analysis of the economic growth within the city to show the specialisation of each district.

La seconde partie du XXe siècle a vu s'installer dans le pays à l'érable la domination d'un nouveau pôle économique concentrant peu à peu la majeure partie des richesses du pays tandis que Montréal, la rivale de toujours et ancienne capitale économique du pays, s'effaçait devant son irrémédiable ascension. Toronto, capitale de l'Ontario affirmait ainsi son potentiel longtemps tenu en sommeil. Cette montée en puissance s'accompagne d'un renouveau architectural et culturel d'une ville qui veut croire que tout lui est permis, même d'égaler New York le lointain modèle américain. Reste qu'à l'heure actuelle, «la grosse pomme canadienne» peine à s'imposer comme pôle incontournable dans le subtil jeu nord américain. De fait, cet article se propose, notamment à travers la mise à disposition d'articles en langue anglaise, de donner un portrait précis d'une ville-monde en devenir au travers d'une présentation de sa diversité ethnique si remarquable, de son rôle économique dans l'espace mondial et nord américain ainsi que d'une analyse plus fine, quartier par quartier, de son dynamisme pour mettre en évidence la spécialisation de ces derniers.
