Introduction. Infant psychology enjoys a specific status within developmental psychology. The origin of this specificity lies in the influence of Piaget’s theory as much as in the empirical data that have led to a radical questioning of this theory. Thereafter followed data interpretations that sometimes went overboard and a theoretical point of view which attributed major competences to the newborn : nativism. This theoretical point of view is now contested from within by some infant specialists, and also from without by specialists of other periods of life or from other disciplines. This is the context in which the present issue has been produced, and in which the present introduction seeks to set the different papers that compose it.

La psychologie du nourrisson a un statut à part dans la psychologie du développement. L’origine de cette spécificité est à chercher dans le poids de la théorie de Piaget autant que dans les données empiriques ayant abouti à une remise en cause radicale de cette théorie. Il s’en est suivi des interprétations des données allant parfois au-delà du raisonnable et une position théorique attribuant au nouveau-né des compétences majeures : le nativisme. Cette position théorique est actuellement contestée de l’intérieur par un certain nombre de spécialistes du bébé, et de l’extérieur par des spécialistes d’autres périodes de la vie ou d’autres disciplines. Tel est le contexte dans lequel a été réalisé ce numéro, et dans lequel cette introduction vise à situer les différents articles qui le composent.
