The Birth of Divinity and of Insanity. The author goes back to the criticisms he had already addressed to the research program of cognitivism applied to the study of religion twenty years ago. This program was motivated by the limits of the structuralist theories of semiosis. But the theory of learning which would allow an author like D. Sperber to limit the study of anthropology to cognitive psychology has nothing say about the universality of symbolic forms, which depends not only on the features of the human mind but also on features that only a philosophy of nature is able to reveal.

L'auteur reprend ici la critique qu'il adressait, il y a déjà vingt ans, au programme de recherche cognitiviste appliqué à l'anthropologie des phénomènes religieux. Ce programme visait notamment à pallier les limites indéniables des théories structuralistes du sémiotique. Mais, la théorie de l'apprentissage, qui permet à un auteur comme D. Sperber de rabattre l'anthropologie sur la psychologie cognitive, n'a lui-même presque rien à dire sur l'universalité des formes symboliques, qui tient non pas aux seules caractéristiques de l'esprit humain mais plutôt à des conditions générales que seule une philosophie de la nature est capable de mettre au jour.
