Dans de très nombreuses cultures humaines, les entités surnaturelles sont régulièrement associées, dans le lexique ou dans les discours, à des phénomènes tels que l’ombre, le reflet ou les photographies. Si cette proximité a été remarquée il y a longtemps, elle a été depuis largement ignorée. Nous défendons dans cet article l’idée suivante : l’association lexicale entre entité surnaturelle et phénomènes perceptifs tels que ombre, reflet et photographie est susceptible d’augmenter la pertinence et de favoriser la mémorisation et la transmission de récits décrivant comment il est possible, en théorie, de percevoir des entités surnaturelles. L’argumentation est fondée sur la confrontation d’une ethnographie détaillée de l’apprentissage de la notion d’entité surnaturelle qu’entretiennent les Sharanahua d’Amazonie occidentale, et d’une série hétérogène d’expériences psychologiques concernant la compréhension des ombres, des reflets et des photographies par les enfants.
