In 1848 Paul Feval was for a time divided between the desire to anwer the call of Young Ireland for help (cf. his contributions to Le Bon Sens du Peuple) and his scruples about violence. Yet by the end of the year the drama which he wrote on the subject of his 1844 novel Les Mysteres de Londres shows him to have returned to the O'Connellian cult. As for the success of that novel, it should be accounted for by the seriousness of purpose the novelist preserves in spite of the conventional of the «feuilleton», and by circumstances : the publication coincided with the imprisonment of O'Connell, and more prosaically with the development of cheap printing. The book was a best seller and impressed images of the sufferings of Ireland on several generations of French minds.

En 1848, Paul Féval est un moment déchiré entre le désir de répondre à l'appel des «Jeunes Irlandais» et ses scrupules devant l'action violente. Il revient au culte O'Connellien avant la fin de l'année avec le drame : Les Mystères de Londres ou les Gentilhommes de la Nuit, tiré de son roman. Le succès de ce roman de 1844 tient aux qualités de l'auteur, à son désir de témoigner malgré les extravagances du mais aussi à un concours de circonstances : la publication coïncida avec l'émoi causé en France par l'emprisonnement d'O'Connell et le développement des éditions à bon marché. Un «best-seller» était né qui devait pendant plusieurs graver des images de l'irlandité souffrante dans les esprits.
