Starting from an analysis of the nature of contemporary Irish republicanism, this article suggests a definition of the concept of ideology. It plays a part in the elaboration of the identity of the individual and of the group, while also legitimizing the opinions, attitudes and actions of the community. The reason why it generally does so at the expense of the truth is that it is by essence an interpretation of reality, the instrument for the creation and preservation of a vision of the world. So as to be in a position both to maintain internal cohesion and to establish links with the outside world, it has a fundamentally strategic function and, as a consequence, resorts to very elaborate communication techniques. The very symbol of the inability of state ideology to cope with minority demands, Irish republicanism raises the question of the relationships between the state and its components in the seemingly paradoxical context of European integration.

Cette étude vise à proposer une définition du concept d'idéologie à partir d'une analyse de la nature du républicanisme irlandais contemporain. Permettant de structurer l'identité de l'individu comme du groupe, elle légitime également les positions et actions de la communauté. Si elle le fait au prix de la vérité, c'est qu'elle est, par essence même, représentation du réel et instrument d'une vision du monde, pour des raisons de cohésion interne autant que de relation au monde extérieur, elle a une fonction fondamentalement stratégique et, en conséquence, fait usage de procédés de communication très élaborés. Symbole par excellence de l'inadéquation de l'idéologie d'Etat aux demandes minoritaires, le républicanisme irlandais pose le problème du rapport tout-Etat à ses parties dans le contexte apparemment paradoxal de l'intégration européenne.
