Since 1922, the Protestants of the 26 counties have been confronted with the legislation and the orientations of the new Irish state which was born out of the struggle of the nation for indépendance. With both hope and fear the Protestant minority was to define its place, role and its relations with the new rulers. Over the seventy years that have elapsed since Indépendance, the various points of contention still reveal the clash between two distinct cultures. That period marked by the evolution of Irish society will have, however, allowed the Protestant minority to gather a new momentum.

A la naissance de l'Etat irlandais l'existence de la minorité protestante allait prendre un aspect juridique indéniable dans la mesure ou sa différence, naguère privilégiée, risquait fort d'être perçue comme un obstacle à l'unité nationale. Sa volonté de perdurer avec ses éléments distinctifs allait se heurter à la législation de l'Etat fortement influencé par l'Église Catholique. Entre l'intégration forcée et la marginalisation y aurait-il une autre voie pour la minorité ? Les quelque soixante-dix années qui se sont écoulées depuis l'indépendance constituent l'épreuve du temps qui a pu permettre à la minorité protestante d'élaborer sa dynamique interne, compte-tenu de l'évolution de la société irlandaise dans son ensemble.
