The flowering of the Blasket autobiographies stems from cultural, geographical and ideological factors. The narratives belong to the Gaelic tradition of the communal voice. Meeting a demand from outsiders, they are in that sense fundamentally altruistic : they are meant to give an account of a near-extinct culture. The narrating T does not aim at a life or a personality, yet a personal voice can be heard through each autobiography. These testimonies once echoed the ideological discourse which celebrated a rural Ireland and a wild west viewed as the exemplary repository of genuine Gaelic traditions. Today as yesterday - however strong the battle waged against passeist myths may be - the reader will gain from these narratives a better understanding of human mores and of man himself.

La floraison des autobiographies des îles Blasket est liée à des facteurs culturels, géographiques, idéologiques. Les récits s'inscrivent dans une tradition gaélique de la voix collective. Sollicités de l'extérieur, ils sont le fruit d'un geste altruiste : peindre une société en train de disparaître : Le JE narrant ne cherche pas à structurer une vie ou à construire une personnalité. Chaque récit donne cependant à entendre une voix personnelle. Ces témoignages ont pu, un temps, participer au discours idéologique célébrant une Irlande rurale et un ouest sauvage, dépositaire exemplaire des traditions. Même si l'on assiste, en Irlande en particulier, à la destruction des mythes, le lecteur d'aujourd'hui, comme celui d'hier, puisera au contact de ces œuvres une meilleure connaissance des sociétés et des hommes.
