This paper is a contribution to the history of the Church of Ireland before and after Gladstone's disestablishment. It describes its role in the life of the nation and the adaptation of its structures and missions in a time of rapid change, North and South of the border. The Church of Ireland has ceased to be the Unionist party in prayer. Because of the dwindling size of its community, it sees itself as a champion of the right of minorities, a ferment of progress in religious matters like the much debated question of the ordination of women and in the search for an adequate solution to social and political major problems like the building of peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland.

Cet article s'attache à cerner l'histoire de la Church of Ireland avant et après son désétablissement par Gladstone. Il décrit son rôle dans la vie de la nation et l'adaptation de ses structures et missions à une époque de changements rapides, au Nord comme au Sud de la frontière. La Church of Ireland ne peut plus être considérée comme le Parti Unioniste en prière. En raison du déclin du nombre de ses fidèles, elle se considère comme un des porte-paroles du droit des minorités, un ferment de progrès dans les questions religieuses comme le problème controversé de l'ordination des femmes et dans la recherche de solutions adaptées aux grands problèmes sociaux et politiques comme la paix et la réconciliation en Irlande du Nord.
