This article describes the setting up of a university study centre in an Irish speaking area in West Kerry in the seventies by University College Cork. It examines location, language attitudes both locally and nationally, and language policy. It also considers administrative, resource and actual current use implications within the local community and in university contexts. A brief description of the centre's facilities is given. Significant advantages, shortcomings and possible future development of such an educational facility are also outlined.

Cet article présente le centre d'études qu'a créé University College Cork dans une zone irlandophone du West Kerry dans les années 70. Il étudie le rôle que joue la situation géographique, l'attitude de la population locale ou nationale face à la langue irlandaise, et la politique linguistique. Il aborde par ailleurs les aspects administratifs et financiers, l'exploitation du centre et ses incidences sur la communauté locale et l'université. Une brève description du centre est donnée. L'étude souligne les avantages qu'offre un tel outil pour l'apprentissage et la maîtrise de la langue.
