In this article, I consider Seamus Deane 's Reading in the Dark and Bernard MacLaverty's Grace Notes by first examining the widening gaps in the narrative, then by observing how the growing need to make sense from what has been left out in both stories may account for die protagonists' withdrawal into the realm of the imagination, thus preventing them from facing an unbearable truth. I will finally examine the various musical or optical strategies used by the characters in order to come to terms with the harsh reality of a place they would rather escape.

Cet article s'intéresse sous différents angles à deux romans contemporains, Reading in the Dark de Seamus Deane et Grace Notes de Bernard MacLaverty. Dans un premier temps, les ellipses narratives font l'objet d'une analyse. Ces trouées laissées dans le réel sont ensuite appréhendées comme l'expression d'une vérité insoutenable, qui génère en retour un désir de trouver refuge dans le monde de l'imagination.
