The critical overemphasis on Seamus Deane's Reading in the Dark as a Derry narrative occludes one of the most important dimensions of the novel : its vectorialism towards the west of Ireland generally and Donegal in particular. In this essay I examine the ways in which Donegal is constructed as a sort of Edenic alternative to the repressive conditions of 1940s and 1950s Northern Ireland. Linking with, but breaking from, revivalist valorizations of the west, Reading in the Dark articulates the powerful need for myths of origin and belonging, while their effects.
