Through the study of the cultivation of irrigated taro in Vanua Lava (Banks islands, Vanuatu) I wish to understand the social value of taro in the Banks islands. This area of Vanuatu is an homogenous group although the islands are diversified, as are their evolution as regards modernity. The hypothesis is that the irrigated systems of taro cultivation in Vanua Lava has to do with the expression of values and a cultural determinations more than with any constraint of the environment. The systemic finality of this kind of agriculture consists of local and regional exchange relationships which ensures a kind of lasting interdependency between diversified cultural identities

Par l'étude des tarodières irriguées à Vanua Lava (îles Banks, Vanuatu), nous chercherons à comprendre la place donnée hier et aujourd'hui à la culture des taros par irrigation dans un ensemble d'îles culturellement homogènes. L'hypothèse est que la culture en tarodières irriguées aux îles Banks et plus particulièrement à Vanua Lava, relève davantage de l'expression des valeurs sociales que d'une dépendance vis-à-vis du milieu naturel. La finalité systémique, consiste pour ces sociétés à participer aux réseaux d'échanges locaux et régionaux et à marquer ainsi par leur interdépendance des identités culturelles diversifiées.
