The Arnauld family, famous for such remarkable figures as Mother Angelica Abbess of Port Royal, the Grand Arnauld and the Secretary Simon Arnauld de Pomponne, has been divided during the seventeenth Century, as many others have been, between the three main components of the French religious scene : Protestantism, Jansenism and Roman Catholicism. The family, torn between its spiritual ideal and its political ambition at the service of the monarchy and the State (with Sully under the reign of Henri IV and at the Conseil d’En haut under Louis XIV), managed to maintain its solidarity and cohesion over the generations, even in terms of financial, marital and social issues, in a shared adherence to the Augustinian doctrine.

La famille Arnauld, rendue célèbre par des personnalités d’exception (la mère Angélique abbesse de Port-Royal, le Grand Arnauld, le ministre Simon Arnauld de Pomponne) a été partagée, comme tant d’autres, entre les trois grandes composantes du paysage religieux français au XVIIe siècle : protestantisme, jansénisme et catholicisme romain. Écartelée entre son idéal spirituel et son ambition politique au service de la monarchie et de l’État (tant auprès de Sully sous Henri IV qu’au Conseil d’En haut sous Louis XIV), elle a réussi à maintenir de génération en génération sa solidarité et sa cohésion, y compris sur le plan des enjeux financiers, matrimoniaux et sociaux, dans une commune adhésion à la doctrine augustinienne.
