Polynesians and astronomical navigation. Were the Polynesians able to realise, without instruments, long voyages on the Pacific Ocean, other than "accidental" ones? Could they use a system of astronomical navigation allowing them to find their way voluntarily to any island ? The authors try to make a synthesis of the available data on that problem. They point out the geographic and astronomical knowledge of the Polynesians and state, from recent works, the arguments in favor of the only possible proceeding for very long travel distances: "latitude landing" (using the stars which pass at the zenith of the island).

Les Polynésiens ont-ils pu, sans instruments, réaliser, à travers l'Océan Pacifique, de grandes traversées, autres qu' « accidentelles » ? En particulier, possédaient-ils un système de navigation astronomique, leur permettant de retrouver volontairement une île sur l'océan ? Faisant une synthèse des données disponibles, les auteurs mettent, tout d'abord, l'accent sur l'étendue des connaissances aussi bien géographiques qu'astronomiques des Polynésiens. Puis, ils indiquent, à la lumière des travaux récents, les arguments qui semblent en faveur de l'utilisation du seul procédé envisageable pour de très longs trajets : 1' « atterrissage en latitude », en se repérant par rapport aux étoiles qui passent au zénith du lieu.
