This study, undertaken on behalf of O.R.S.T.O.M., fits into the framework of the M.A.B. (Man and Biosphere) programme, theme VII : " Study of insular ecosystems " and is about an atoll northwest of the Tuamotu (east Polynesia). After an account dealing with history, demography, organisation of space and economy, the study considers the situation created by the introduction of an innovation, the culture of pearls, and the problems it poses. These are not only of a technological order, but also concern the social-economic change introduced by the innovation, as well as the social relationships which came into being between the atoll and the exterior: the urban universe, the administration, the Europeans. To reduce the problematics of the introduction of the innovation to its technical aspects is tantamount to dangerously disregarding the obstacles of a sociological order.

Cette étude, réalisée au titre de l'O.R.S.T.O.M., s'inscrit dans le cadre du programme M.A.B. (Man and Biosphere), thème VII : « Étude des écosystèmes insulaires », et concerne un atoll du Nord-Ouest des Tuamotu (Polynésie Orientale). Après un exposé concernant l'histoire, la démographie, l'organisation de l'espace et l'économie, l'étude envisage la situation causée par l'introduction d'une innovation, la perliculture et les problèmes qu'elle pose. Ceux-ci ne sont pas seulement d'ordre technologique mais concernent aussi le changement socio-économique introduit par l'innovation ainsi que les rapports sociaux qui s'établissent entre l'atoll et l'extérieur : l'univers urbain, l'Administration, les Européens. Réduire la problématique de l'introduction de l'innovation à ses aspects techniques revient à méconnaître dangereusement les obstacles d'ordre sociologique.
