De l'oral à l'écrit : les puta tupuna de Rurutu

This article gives an account of the transition from oral tradition of a French Polynesian island, Rurutu, to a particular written form — following on contact from the outside — which is that of the puta tupuna, handwritten family registers where since the end of the nineteenth century the main elements of the collective memory of this community (amongst which an important mythical corpus) have been recorded. But these mythical texts, such as have come down to us today, cannot be taken for the simple "written version" of traditional tales. The transition to the written word has in fact brought about a fair number of alterations or reformulations for which an account and analysis are subsequently put forward. A precise example makes it possible to show how the minds of Polynesian people used the traditional mythical structure to integrate and assume the phenomena of the cultural contact and thus proceed to a true reinterpretation of history based on the principles of an elaborated religious syncretism consequent and in reaction to a brutally imposed conversion from the outside, 160 years ago.

Cet article présente le bilan du passage de la tradition orale d'une île de Polynésie française, Rurutu, à une forme écrite particulière, consécutive au contact, qui est celle des puta tupuna, registres familiaux manuscrits où depuis la fin du XIXe siècle se trouvent consignés les éléments principaux de la mémoire collective de cette communauté, parmi lesquels un important corpus mythique. Mais ces textes mythiques tels qu'ils nous parviennent aujourd'hui ne sauraient passer pour la simple « version écrite » des récits traditionnels : le passage à l'écrit a en effet entraîné bon nombre d'altérations ou de reformulations dont un exposé et une analyse sont proposés par la suite. Un exemple précis permet de montrer comment la pensée populaire polynésienne a su utiliser la structure mythique traditionnelle pour intégrer et assumer le phénomène du contact culturel, et procéder ainsi à une véritable réinterprétation de l'histoire, articulée sur les principes d'un syncrétisme religieux élaboré en conséquence — et en réaction — à une conversion imposée brutalement de l'extérieur, il y a 160 ans.
