This work is a statistical approach to the petroglyphs of New Caledonia. A quantita- tive study of the geographical distribution of the motifs was carried out. For this an inventory of the petroglyphs was drawn up and the typology of the motifs executed, so as to classify them in categories and sub-categories. Maps showing the distribution of these motifs, mostly given in percentages, were drawn up for the whole of the Territory. This study takes into account 2 198 motifs, in 30 different categories. The existence of regional categories emerges; certain motifs appear to be associated with clans. Finally, there are traditional tales about petroglyphs in New Caledonia.

Ce travail est une approche statistique des pétroglyphes de Nouvelle-Calédonie. Une étude quantitative de la répartition géographique des motifs a été faite. Pour cela, il a fallu dresser un inventaire des pétroglyphes, puis faire la typologie des motifs pour les classer en différentes catégories et sous catégories. Des cartes de répartition de ces motifs, exprimées le plus souvent en pourcentages, ont été dressées pour l'ensemble du Territoire. Cette étude prend en compte 2 198 motifs entrant dans 30 catégories différentes. L'existence de catégories régionales se dégagent ; certains motifs semblent être associés à des clans. Enfin, des récits traditionnels se rapportant aux pétroglyphes existent en Nouvelle-Calédonie.
