On a Claimed Decipherment of the Easter Island Tablets. Fischer's claim of having deciphered the Easter Island writing (also known as rongorongo), enthusias- tically reported in some of the scientific press ("Nature, New Scientist,), is groundless. One single reading is proposed, of a sequence of just three glyphs, and that does not constitute a decipherment by any stretch of imagination. This reading contains at once a barbarism (a Tahitian loanword) and a solecism (this loanword is syntactically misplaced) ; it is not corroborated anywhere in Easter Island or Polynesian traditions, and its purport, by which a celestial body is engendered by mere animals, pluralized to boot, goes against all known Polynesian lore, where genitors are gods, goddesses, cultural heroes, sometimes animals or natural phenomena, but always personalized, and never pluralized. The method by which this reading is reached is incoherent, suffering from overfitting the data, eurocentric reasoning, and flawed logic. If correct, this « decipherment » would lead to an absurd reading of a sequence of signs identified forty years ago by Butinov and Knorozov as compatible with a genealogy of the form « A, son of B ; B, son of C ; C... ». The bias and incoherence of Fischer's reasoning is further demonstrated in a letter to the Journal of the Polynesian Society in which he argues in twelve points, against Langdon, that the Easter Island writing is of recent invention, triggered by the Spanish visit in 1770. Fischer's claims, demonstrably baseless, some contrary to fact, do not constitute an advancement to our knowledge and understanding of the Easter Island tablets and history; rather a regression. The continuing publicity around this decipherment bears all the hallmarks of a promotional campaign rather than of a work of scholarship.

En outre, cette interprétation contient à la fois un barbarisme (un emprunt au tahitien) et un solécisme ; elle ne se trouve nulle part dans les littératures orales pascuanes ou polynésiennes ; dire qu'un corps céleste peut être engendré par de vulgaires animaux est contraire aux traditions où les procréateurs sont des dieux, des déesses, des personnages mythiques, parfois certes des animaux ou des éléments, mais toujours personnifiés et jamais au pluriel. La démarche menant à cette interprétation est incohérente, entachée de distortion des données, d'eurocentrisme, d'erreurs de raisonnement. Si cette interprétation était juste, elle conduirait en outre à un déchiffrement absurde d'une brève suite de signes où, il y a quarante ans, Butinov et Knorozov avaient vu une généalogie possible, du type « A, fils de B ; B, fils de C ; C... ». Le prétendu déchiffrement de Fischer, loin de contribuer à nos connaissances de la civilisation pascuane, constitue plutôt une régression. Le battage qui continue à se faire autour est d'ailleurs bien plus la marque d'une opération publicitaire orchestrée que d'un travail sérieux.
