The passage which Malalas devotes to Dionysos and Pentheus in his chronicle is a rationalistic version of the ancient myth. It has been strongly influenced by the method of historical interpretation which Palaiphatos and Evhemeros worked out during the Hellenistic period. Malalas' rereading is also distinguished by its essentially political character (Dionysos has been turned into an usurper) and by its moralizing tendency (the infanticide motif has been suppressed and the established order is restored at the end of the episode).

Le passage de la chronique universelle de Malalas consacré à Dionysos et Penthée nous offre une version rationalisante du mythe antique, fortement influencée par la méthode d'interprétation historique développée par Palaiphatos et Évhémère à l'époque hellénistique. Les autres caractéristiques de cette relecture byzantine sont sa dimension essentiellement politique (transformation de Dionysos en figure d'usurpateur) et sa tendance moralisante (évacuation du motif de l'infanticide et restauration de l’ordre établi à la fin de l'épisode).
