De Mari à Délos, un lien : le palmier

The palm tree is the link between Mari and Delos. It is a symbol which suggests the wealth and the essence of power tied to royal rule, as it is shown in the Palm Court of the Palace of Mari in the early Second Millenium on the official block and the Painting of the Investiture of Zimri Lim. There is a dove above the tree, associated with Isthar, the central goddess of the composition. Conversely, in Delos, because palm trees are found in various sanctuaries and hellenistic coins show a swan above a palm tree, one is reminded of the Myth of Apollo’s birth. Should we, therefore, seek in the East the origin of the iconographical motif of the palm tree topped by a divine child ?

Le palmier crée un lien inattendu entre Mari et Délos. Symbole exprimant la richesse et la puissance vitale liées à l’exercice du pouvoir royal, comme le montre son utilisation dans le bloc officiel et dans la peinture de l’Investiture du Palais de Mari du début du IIe millénaire, il semble, du fait de la présence d’une colombe au-dessus de l’arbre, associé à Ishtar, divinité centrale de la scène. A Délos la présence du palmier dans divers sanctuaires et le monnayage hellénistique qui use du palmier surmonté d’un cygne rappellent le mythe de la naissance d’Apollon. Doit-on, en conséquence, chercher en Orient l’origine du motif iconographique du palmier surmonté d’un oiseau divin ?
