The Institute of classical Archaeology of the University of Strasbourg contains 1800 very old photographs collected by the German archaeologist Adolf Michaelis (1865-1910), the founder of this institute. If the main part of the «Michaelis collection» is dated from the years 1860 to 1900, about 200 photographs belong to the years 1850. They allow one to better know the first phase of the activity of famous photographers such as James Anderson, Giorgio Sommer, Philippos Margaritis, Dimitrios Konstantinou... . Almost all the photographers identified in the collection worked permanently or partly in Greece and in Italy. Some of them are highly talented photographers such as Paul des Granges, P. Bette, and William Stillman (Alinari, Brogi, Sommer, Sebah) and represent the principal interest of this collection.

Mille huit cents très anciennes photographies, rassemblées par l’archéologue allemand Adolf Michaelis (1865-1900), sont conservées à l’Institut d’archéologie classique de Strasbourg, dont il fut le fondateur. Si la majeure partie de la «Collection Michaelis» remonte aux années 1860-1900, deux cents photographies datent en revanche de 1850. Elles appartiennent à la première phase de la carrière de photographes célèbres tels que James Anderson, Giorgio Sommer, Philippos Margaritis, Dimitrios Konstantinou... Les auteurs des photographies qui ont été identifiées dans la collection ont travaillé, continûment ou temporairement, en Grèce et en Italie. Ce sont quelques photographes particulièrement talentueux comme Paul des Granges, P. Bette et William Stillman qui donnent tout son intérêt à cette collection.
