The versified epitaphs in Greek are part of a corpus of African inscriptions drafted in Greek or using the Greek alphabet, which have long been neglected by African Historiography. Yet the ancient presence of Hellenism in Africa, typical of the literate elite along with a more popular brand, should prompt scholars to list and research these documents in close relation with similar Latin documents. This category of Greek poems is varied and complex since it includes monolingual or bilingual texts together with hybrid ones, both literary and epigraphic. This article aims to study their characteristics to provide an outline of the underlying social and cultural phenomenon in which they are rooted.

Les épitaphes versifiées en grec font partie du corpus des inscriptions africaines rédigées en grec ou faisant appel à l’écriture grecque, longtemps négligées par l’historiographie africaine. La présence ancienne en Afrique d’un hellénisme propre aux lettrés et celle d’un hellénisme populaire incitent pourtant à recenser et à étudier ces documents en relation étroite avec les documents latins analogues. Cette catégorie de poèmes grecs n’est pas sans complexité puisqu’elle comprend des textes monolingues ou bilingues, et de statut mixte, à la fois littéraire et épigraphique : l’article en étudiera les caractéristiques pour retracer les contours du phénomène social et culturel dont il est le signe.
