"Ἐπέκεινα τῆς οὐσίας": une formule platonicienne chez Numénius et Alcinoos?

In the book VI of the Republic, Plato considers the Idea of the Good as something which is beyond being (ἐπέκεινα τῆς οὐσίας). In this paper, we want to study how this expression was understood by the middle Platonists, especially Numenius and Alcinoos, during the second century A. D. But they had to face the following problem : how to combine the superiority of the first principle with its function of principle by which it is in relation with the things it rules ? How can it be the principle of all beings if it is absolutely beyond being ? This is the reason why they gave an original interpretation of the platonic expression : the fact that the first principle is beyond being does not mean that it is not a being (contrary to the neoplatonic interpretation) but that it is the model of all beings, while it is itself a being.

Comment l’expression platonicienne ἐπέκεινα τῆς οὐσίας, employée dans le livre VI de la République pour signifier que le bien est «par-delà l’essence» , a-t-elle été interprétée avant la période dite néoplatonicienne ? A-t-elle-même fait l’objet d’une réflexion particulière ? À travers deux auteurs appartenant au moyen platonisme, Numénius et Alcinoos, on montrera que différents textes permettent de reconstituer une interprétation originale de la formule, qui n’insiste pas sur une transcendance radicale mais qui tente de concilier la supériorité du principe premier avec sa relation aux autres réalités, et de maintenir entre eux une continuité ontologique.
