Of the three preserved neopythagorean treatises On Kingship, that of Diotogenes is probably the one that best allows an exploration of the problematic question of dating. The present historical commentary first outlines Diotogenes’ definition of the “good king” and his qualities. It then gathers the main clues converging towards a dating at the end of the Hellenistic period or at the beginning of the Principate (1st century BCE-1st century CE). It does so by examining the echoes with the political language of the Hellenistic kingship and by attempting to locate certain great political virtues in the evolution of monarchical ideology.

Des trois traités néopythagoriciens Sur la royauté conservés, celui de Diotogène est sans doute celui qui permet le mieux d’explorer la question, combien problématique, de la datation. Ce commentaire historique s’attache tout d’abord à définir la figure du bon roi et ses qualités selon Diotogène. Il rassemble ensuite les principaux indices convergeant vers une datation à la fin de la période hellénistique ou au début du Principat (Ier siècle av. J.-C.-Ier siècle ap.), en examinant les échos avec le langage politique de la royauté hellénistique et en cherchant à situer certaines grandes vertus politiques dans l’évolution de l’idéologie monarchique.
