In the treatise On Kingship, Ecphantus makes the imitation of God not only the foundation of the sovereign’s legitimacy, but also the driving force behind the subjects’ benevolence towards him. However, the weakness inherent in human nature sometimes leads the sovereign to use persuasion, akin to coercion, on his subjects. Ecphantus thus sketches a persuasive theory of the logos that helps men return to a superior lifestyle. We will study the nature and functions of the logos in this text, in the light of the different philosophical traditions which may have inspired Ecphantus.

Dans le traité Sur la royauté, Ecphante fait de l’imitation du dieu non seulement le fondement de la légitimité du souverain, mais aussi le moteur de la bienveillance des sujets à son égard. Cependant, la faiblesse inhérente à la nature humaine conduit parfois le souverain à user sur ses sujets de la persuasion, parente de la contrainte. Ecphante esquisse ainsi une théorie du logos persuasif, qui aide les hommes à revenir à un mode de vie supérieur. Nous étudierons la nature et les fonctions du logos d’après ce texte, à la lumière des traditions philosophiques dont Ecphante pourrait s’être inspiré.
