Apart from its regular aspectual and temporal values, the French imparfait shows a whole range of pragmatic uses in discourse, generally assumed to be modal values. The aim of this article is to provide evidence for a temporal and aspectual analysis of these so called modal values. The pragmatic values are proved to be derived from the regular temporal and aspectual values of the imparfait, by means of general pragmatic principles, within the theoretical framework of markers and hypermarkers of speech acts.
