The term «tepal » (perianth-segment that is not clearly distinguishable as being either a sepal or a petal) is in fact used in two distinct cases. The use of term «tepal » to describe the perianth-segments of Monocotyledons is incorrect, as the fact that they are arranged in two whorls means that they may be clearly distinguished as being either sepals (outer segments) or petals (inner segments), despite their similarity of appearance (the sepals are indeed petaloïd). On the other hand, the use of term «tepal » to describe any of an indefinite number of perianth-segments arranged in a spiral is correct, as the spiral arrangement renders any distinction between calyx (sepals) and corolla (petals) impossible.

Le terme «tépale » recouvre deux réalités. Dans un cas (Monocotylédones) on l'applique de manière abusive aux pièces d'un périanthe constitué de sépales et de pétales qui se ressemblent, mais qui sont parfaitement distincts en tant que tels, car disposés en deux verticilles. Il s'agit simplement de fleurs dont les sépales sont pétaloïdes. Dans d'autres cas, ce terme s'applique, à juste titre, à un ensemble de pièces pétaloïdes en nombre indéfini insérées selon une spirale, sans distinction possible entre calice et corolle : il s'agit alors des véritables tépales.
