On doit à S.J. Gould d'avoir pour la première fois démontré une remarquable covariance négative entre les variations intra-spécifiques de deux caractéristiques géométriques des coquilles adultes de gastéropodes : le nombre de tours de spire et la taille standard des tours. On a entrepris de vérifier si cette covariance, jusque là observée seulement au sein du genre endémique Cerion, est susceptible de se retrouver chez d'autres espèces de gastéropodes, y compris éloignées de la première observation, tant au point de vue phylogénétique qu'environnemental. Le même type de covariance négative marquée a ainsi été retrouvé chez trois espèces européennes communes d'escargots terrestres, Pomatias elegans, Cepaea nemoralis ou marin, Euspira catena. L'efficacité de la fonctionnalité régulatrice attribuée à cette covariance a en outre été testée et positivement vérifiée : contribution significative à la stabilisation du volume de coquille en dépit de la variabilité intra-spécifique de la taille des tours spiraux. Ces résultats incitent à penser que cette covariance régulatrice méconnue pourrait, en fait, être bien plus largement répandue au sein de la classe des Gastéropodes, point qui reste cependant à confirmer par des études plus étendues.
