Le statut ambigu des catégories taxinomiques infra-subspécifiques en zoologie est rappelé. Des raisons à la fois nomenclaturales et déontologiques nous paraissent devoir motiver le maintien et la reconnaissance, officialisées par le Code de nomenclature zoologique, d’au moins une catégorie taxinomique inférieure au rang de sous-espèce, que nous proposons être la «variété » , et son acceptation lorsqu’elle se fonde sur des motifs légitimes. Lorsqu’un chercheur estime devoir élever une population animale au rang de «variété » , c’est qu’il estime que les caractères diagnostiques constants propres à l’ensemble des individus de cette population sont insuffisants pour l’élever au rang de sous-espèce, mais qu’il convient de mettre en évidence son originalité par l’attribution d’un nom scientifique. Or, le Code de nomenclature, sous sa version actuelle, ne gère pas la «variété » en tant que catégorie taxinomique et ne la prend en compte que si elle est ultérieurement, soit élevée au groupe-espèce, soit mise en synonymie avec un taxon du groupe-espèce (en occasionnant ainsi une perte d’information scientifique). L’officialisation d’une telle catégorie infra-subspécifique permettrait en outre de respecter la pensée et le travail du chercheur qui a individualisé ce taxon et analysé en conscience sa position systématique ; cela en évitant qu’un tiers en mal d’éthique ne s’attribue le bénéfice des résultats de son collègue en se bornant à remplacer le nom donné par celui-ci au taxon considéré par un autre qu’il lui aura lui-même attribué lors d’un simple changement de son rang taxinomique.
