Résumé En

Signing the ellipse: the circle and its double. Different narrative techniques — repetitivity, circularity, instability of the referential processes — allow a story to hinder the hermeneutic function and to defer meaning indefinitely. Mérimée' s "Venus of Ille", usually read either as a fantastic novel or as a precursor of the detective novel, is exemplary of this genre of narration — the « récit-ellipse » : the uncertainty concerning its genre reflects its being a story programming uncertainty.
