Empty space is a constant, in Calvino's work, as a condition for existence or creation. The dichotomy is one of the many that inform his work, and is most notably linked to that between form and formlessness. Calvino does not aim at antithesis or synthesis between poles, but at the production of multiplicity — bridges of language. Thus formal rules of literary construction are not empty (vain) for Calvino ; they serve as guides through (and for) nothingness.
