The Divided Man Jules Renard's work is seen as a purification of style from image-renouncing poetry (1886), the short story (1888), the novel (1892), and perhaps, as in the collection of brief notes and dialogues published in 1908 as Ragotte, literature. But in as much as Ragotte — and the Journal — are caught between transparency and imagery, they create a distance which, inevitably, is literary.
