The Native and the Foreign: Dialectics of Singularity in J.-J. Rabearivelo, F. Ranaivo and J. Rabemananjara The three greatest Malagasy poets in French felt and expressed their identity as Malagasy. But they have variously negotiated their relation- ship both to their origins and to their language or languages, either accepting or refusing the test of the foreign and the apprenticeship of self.
