Genre as a Work of Art Generic theory, as illustrated by Aristotle and Hegel, treats genre as a work of art and the work of art in terms of its genre, thereby showing a porosity between the categories of which French classical aesthetics is the best illustration — a fact rarely even seen, let alone understood.
