The Wise Man and History: Poetry and Redemption in Hugo's "William Shakespeare" For Hugo, the relationship of art to history is essential, and both explains and is included within his concern for describing his literary predecessors and establishing their hierarchy. In "William Shakespeare", Hugo, through the figure of his double and brother-in-arms, Juvenal, both defines the great poet - by nature opposed to the tyrant — and situates himself within the history that includes Juvenal.
