In Memory of Poetry The Vita Nuova is based on the principle that writing calls forth further writing, which calls forth further writing. . . Among writers deeply influenced by Dante, Mi- chelet stands out for understanding that Dante's poetry depended on his listening to all the voices before and around him; while Osip Mandelstam brings out Dante's relationship to painting.
